Hey Swan!
thanks for the comment. Sounds like fun! lets do it.

I also applaud you for trying the Talkshoe approach to #Eventprofs. Where I think the technology of twitter let us all down I like that you pushed the envelope for us all.

Cheers

Mike, I think you are onto a good idea here. One suggestion since it is a podcast and does not need to be live, I would wait until after the chat and then just use the transcript to have a "commentator" type discussion with someone. As long as you said some of the times out loud to each other, you would both stay in synch.

I would be very happy to be a "guest" in that manner if you ever want to run that type of podcast.

All the best,
Swan

Randy- Thanks so much for checking out the blog.
Sam- I think you are totally right! This type of collaboration lounge will become more and more of a "must have" for people to share and build on ideas.
Jane- Thanks so much for the comment. I agree!

Jay Smethurst and his partner, Brian, are very creative in their approach to group meetings. The illumination gallery creates a great venue to have interactions and come up with solutions among peers. The visual concept is very interesting and helpful. They can help any size group solve problems and move companies forward. Creating great interactions makes it worthwhile for companies to bring their people together! Well done, Jay!

Jay and Mike, I really like the ideas around the collaboration lounges and the idea galleries! We all like to draw pictures on the back of napkins. It sounds like your collaboration lounges provide the tools for people to do that during the breaks. Excellent ideas!!

Here are a few Nate Baily sent in:

Thanks Nate!!!

Extraordinaries- iphone application- bored in a meeting? Channel idle moments into bursts of handheld volunteerism. You are sent a job translating documents for a nonprofit or tagging an archive of historic photos for a museum.

Next Flight-- Got bumped? Leaving early? next Flight tracks departures from more than 4,200 airports and 1100 airlines. it sounds overwhelming, but you can filter by carrier. $2.99

HearPlanet-- Like having a tour guide in your pocket, HearPlanet tells you what attractions are nearby and then plays the wikipedia description

Air Sharing-

WiFi finder (good if using the skype application) Could be a huge savings for you!

World customs- which way to wrap your kimono and other helpful hits on customs.

iamhere- tells people where you are...

Well he is an employee so I dont knwo if that would be ok, and I think it is also about his personal brand as Ed. Do you think people would still follow if he was a business. I grapple with this concept of business being social. Social media is about social relationships so it means human connection to me. What do you think?

Thanks so much for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Interesting view, but I still wonder why he hasn't changed his Twitter ID to something that resembles his restaurant's name. Is there an advantage to being nctrnlbst instead?

Nice article. These day's it is so critical to engage participants and tap into their creative and critical thinking. No one needs to bring participants together just to show them presentations and ask for Q&A. Meetings will have to produce real results, right there in the meeting room. And real interaction and real dialogue will be key to driving the new kinds of experiences that organizations will be achieving through their meetings.

Twitter is one way to provide this kind of engagement; however, it can be a little risky and it's not easy to fully harness the thinking of the group. Also, not all participants necessarily have access to Twitter or are comfortable using it.

For two decades, CoVision has pioneered ways to maximize participation, engagement and outcomes in large meetings. We have supported the facilitation of thousands of meetings in the US and abroad, appropriately integrating engagement technologies to support large group processes.

This is a really good article on the effective uses of Twitter - very similar to the things we've been doing at the conferences and events we manage for our corporate and association clients.

Some examples are our use of:
- Using Wiffiti at Events: http://tinyurl.com/WiffitiforBusyEvent

- How to Embed Twitter: http://www.busyevent.com/blog/?p=91

- Face-to-Face Social Networking: http://www.busyevent.com/blog/?p=95

Ben Stein is his customary articulate and witty self in the above article. Kudos to him for speaking out on behalf of the meetings industry. He has great skill and talent with words and writing, and it is no wonder that Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford hired him as their speechwriter.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Stein several years ago when he keynoted my Thursday morning general session for about 5,000 folks. He did not travel with a handler and was very charming and friendly. His presentation was at 8:30 am in the morning and he didn't think anyone would come to see him. It was a packed house and he started out by telling some less than appropriate jokes. I was concerned the audience would turn on him and he was able to mold and melt the audience with his words and craft. He received a standing ovation at the end and then proceeded to walk the exhibit hall, as two of us tried to keep the crowds back from swarming him. The "dry eyes, red eyes, Bueller-repeating" man was a joy to work with and I'm very grateful that he understands the importance of meetings and events to the business world.

Mike you are correct not just in business are there bad apples, but overall human population there are bad apples. One percent of the population abusing the opportunity to do business and have fun does not represent the industry as a whole. President Obama have it all wrong. He does not see that even in his own organization in DC have people holding positions with power abusing and taking advantage of it. I'm all for democracy, but Obama have really taking it too far by targeting a specific city and specific companies. Bad example for a president to lead his country by. Cities like Hawaii and Las Vegas who's counting on meetings and conferences to bring in the cashflow to keep the city strong will hurt the most in the long run.

Thank you for your comment!

I know the events and meetings industry is thirsty for more examples of creating World Wide Raves that people can share content online and get an terrific audience. Thanks so much for the other example of a WWR! I look forward to our interview for our show. I think your seminars and keynotes would fit perfectly for many of our listeners events, meetings.

My copies of The new rules of PR and Marketing is getting pretty dogeared. I am glad your new book of World Wide Rave is a hard cover! :) Great books!

Thanks again!

My email to Sen Kerry is below.

Senator Kerry,

I grew up in MA and grew up voting for you. But, I have to say, I am now seriously questioning those years of loyalty due to your proposed bill to stop companies from holding meetings, holiday parties etc without permission. I have worked in the travel industry all of my life - I began loading luggage for Delta at Logan - and have never witnessed the kinds of challenges we are now facing. Your proposed legislation will KILL the convention and meetings business - travel employs over 2.4M people in the US including many voters like me. If you want to ADD more people to the unemployment rolls, continue on with your scare tactics and ill-conceived legislation. Meanwhile, I will be letting all of my friends and family who are still in MA that you are no friend to those of us in the travel business.

Mike,

I think social media can only help those events which embrace new and powerful concepts.

Facebook, Linkedin, Blogs or twitter will not help if the concept is weak, too traditional and not responsive to the online dynamics.

On the other hand, if planners shape their concepts around social media, there will be great results

Thanks for the great read

I so agree. Of course some abuses of meetings has occurred but in what form of business is their not some bad apples? Overall it is critical that we keep meeting to get our economy rolling again. Thanjs so much for the comment.

You raise a good point about the cancellation fees -- why is that not considered wasteful spending? At least by holding a meeting they are getting return on their investment. By canceling, they might as well open a window and throw out bags of cash! My advice to companies: Keep on meeting, in whatever fashion you can afford. Don't let the government take away our freedom to gather like minds together for the exchange of ideas!

Hey Temple-
Thanks so much for the comment. Actually I do understand why President Obama and the government has this knee jerk reaction to Las Vegas. It is a huge problem for the events and meetings industry as a whole. Turning to teleconferences and technology is an option but nothing beats face to face meetings to get real work done. Of course I am biased owning a Production company. Plus I have family directly effected by the economic downturn in Las Vegas. We need to build confidence in our country and spend those dollars get them back into the economy. I wonder what types of meetings are you talking about that do not need to take place?

Thanks again for reading the Blog.

Not sure you convinced me. Las Vegas is a victim of its own promotion campaign as an area of sin and oppulence. you can't blame others for sunddenly believing the hype.

While Las Vegas surely will hurt - and your cancellation fee examples are good in the short-term - there are frankly a lot of meetings that really don't need to take place, period's nothing that can't be done where most of a company's employees are - or hey, use technology and have a teleconference.

Want an inspiring speaker - put him or her on YouTube or get them from there.

Friends in Travel-
Your efforts to stop the demonizing of meetings and conference travel is closely related to our efforts to establish B.E.S.T. - the Bottom-up Economic Stimulus through Tourism program. I hope you'll join the travel industry leaders who have already signed-on to support "Everyone Gets A Vacation" at http://tinyurl.com/dju7qd ...Details follow.

B.E.S.T.
Send America on vacation to help the economy!

After pouring billions into a black-hole bailout no one seems to understand and which gave us only greedy, rich, no-account executives getting richer and greedier as their businesses crumbled, it's time for a stimulus program that will work immediately for all hardworking American taxpayers.

Let's ask President Barack Obama and Congress to put money where it will immediately create jobs and raise morale. Let's ask them to put dollars into the hands of those who will rapidly inject the money back into the local, regional and national economy.

We need the Bottom-up Economic Stimulus through Tourism program. Call it BEST for short.

It will send every adult taxpayer, their dependents and every adult Social Security recipient a check for $500. These checks will be good for use in 2009 only. And they can only be used in payment for a vacation (at least two nights and 100 miles from the home address) at state certified travel businesses (resorts, lodging, dining, transportation, amusement and tour operators) within the United States.

Each state will publish a list of certified tourism businesses so individuals can quickly make reservations and start enjoying their "stimulus." This will money into travel businesses that will immediately hire workers to deal with increased demand.

These businesses historically offer good employment to millions of people who are young, older, new to the workforce, minorities, students and many in need of part-time jobs. These people, and the businesses that employ them, spend and reinvest their earnings as fast as they get them. So they rapidly circulate the dollars back into their local communities.

These earnings support other local merchants and organizations. These are the people who get a paycheck and spend it locally. They buy cars, make mortgage payments, pay for rent, food and other consumer goods. These businesses and their employees pay local, sales, state and federal income taxes, so revenues will increase.

Of course a vacation would do everyone some good, improve morale, help families bond, build an appreciation of nature, educate traveling students and literally help get this country happily back on the road again.

It will not solve all of our problems. But it will be a better, quicker and more successful shot in the arm than the useless and massive transfusion we gave to the walking dead in the financial community.

We need BEST now! You can easily support the idea on-line by joining the FaceBook group: Everyone Gets A Vacation at http://tinyurl.com/dju7qd

Gary Knowles, of Madison, WI is a travel writer and marketing consultant to travel, hospitality and entertainment businesses who served as Director of Communications for the Wisconsin Division of Tourism from 1979-93 under Govs. Lee Dreyfus, Tony Earl and Tommy Thompson

Let’s ask President Barack Obama and Congress to put money where it will immediately create jobs and raise morale. Let’s ask them to put dollars into the hands of those who will rapidly inject the money back into the local, regional and national economy.

Each state will publish a list of certified tourism businesses so individuals can quickly make reservations and start enjoying their “stimulus.” This will money into travel businesses that will immediately hire workers to deal with increased demand.

FYI, we have two patents pending (since 2007) on a technology for the resale, mitigation, transfer and replacement of canceled contracts. We have mitigated or replaced $11 Million in groups since October 2008

Hey Mike - As you can see by the way I'm typing lately I either haven't had enough sleep or I've had too much coffee. Quite possibly a combination thereof.

Thanks for the kudos on MHS. It's been a 2 year labor of love and a model that we believe could offer some real relief to millions of people in this difficult economy like this. Believe it or not, according to The Economist magazine, frequent flyer miles are the second largest currency next to the dollar. Now people can actually take their Monopoly money and get what they want or need without having to go more in debt.

Thanks for the offer on the show, what did you have in mind?

It was always dream as a kid who loved to read newspapers that I could read them on a computer screen one day! Yes, I had a computer in high school, an Apple IIe I believe....now I've noticed they papers have shrunk in size and content. There are advertisements on the front page! Who would have ever thought.

Phone books, tossed those a few years ago. My husband has finally realized that no one advertises in those anymore and the cost is so expensive too. What he spends on an ad per month in the phone book, would cover a years expenses on him website!

Just my two cents!

I probably spent more time than I should have on your site, but couldn't help myself. I must admit that I only recently joined Twitter - kicking and screaming I might add (despite being a social media advocate). I'm making my way up the Twitter Acceptance Ladder: http://tinyurl.com/9hu8eq.

My stream is http://twitter.com/ready2spark. I've also joined the meetings group based on your recommendation. I hope there's scheduled times to meet & chat with one another.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you.
